India is investing heavily in an ambitious, high-stakes bid to become a global semiconductor powerhouse. But the government's push to ween the country off imports and scale up manufacturing infrastructure poses formidable challenges.On a visit to the United States this June, the Indian leader met with the CEO of semiconductor giant Micron Technology, agreeing on a deal that will see the US firm set up a 2.5-billion-dollar chip testing and assembly plant at the Dholera site.
It won't be the first factory at the new city. That project is being handled by Indian mining conglomerate Vedanta Limited , a newcomer to the semiconductor industry.In 2022, Vedanta partnered with Taiwanese iPhone manufacturer Hon Hai Technology Group, known internationally as Foxconn, to manufacture chips and display panels in India, with the aim of producing 40,000 wafers a month by 2027.
A New City in Making
Dholera boasts of ready availability of large land parcels for development. Environment clearance for 920 sq km by MoEF & CC is already in place for the development of the industrial city. State-of-the-art infrastructure is being developed inside the area of the Dholera Industrial City with roads and rail connectivity, treated & recycled water, power supply, central effluent treatment plant (CETP), sewage treatment plant (STP) etc. The plug & play facilities help the industry players to set up their units easily while directly connecting the various utilities of water, power, communication and other services with the pre-installed facilities across the lengths and breadths of the area.
Various infrastructure developments are happening at Dholera. These include the 144.9 km of 4-lane road network and internal roads with pre-planned utilities ducts and cycling tracks. Stormwater canal is of 6.5 km long and the total length of stormwater drainage in the activation area is 138 km.

Targeted for investment in new sectors including Green Hydrogen, Solar Energy, Semiconductor, Dholera, GiftCityMore than 35 country partners and more than 150 countries have been invited to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Apart from this, notices have also been sent to CEOs of more than 2,000 companies in the country.

India will be Chip making Superpower
They have set their sights on a barren plain in Gujarat, Dholera (DOE-lay-rah), designated the future home of India’s first “semicon city.” It’s the size of Singapore. Slicing through sodden fields, ruler-straight new roads connect planning offices to power stations, freshwater canals from a diverted river and the gargantuan outline, traced in the dust, of an international airport. Dholera’s vast grid is otherwise virtually empty. Making microchips also requires a lot of bespoke ingredients. Mr. Vaishnaw, the government official in charge, said India’s biggest chemical plants were near Dholera and could pump out the specialized gases and liquids needed to run any chip fab. Seaports and railheads can ensure high levels of connectivity.
South Korean Firm Visited DholeraSIR.
Nearly half a dozen South Korean firms visited the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) to explore possibilities for setting up a display fabrication unit in Gujarat, official sources said Tuesday. “A delegation comprising certain companies spent an entire day at Dholera SIR. The delegation included senior representatives from the Korea Display Industry Association and the Director General of Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA),” said Vijay Nehra, secretary, of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat. Setting up a display fabrication unit is extremely capital intensive and requires an estimated investment of Rs 70,000-75,000 crore over a period of 2-3 years, as per officials. Such a unit will pave the way for manufacturing indigenous displays for devices like smartphones, tablets, televisions, laptops, and others.
